Samhain

Samhain

Samhain is one of the most powerful supernatural entities ever encountered by the Ghostbusters. Known as the Ghost of Halloween, he is not simply another ghost - he is an ancient spirit tied directly to the origins of Halloween itself.

Origins and Ancient History

Samhain's origins stretch back more than a thousand years to ancient Ireland. According to Ghostbusters records, he first appeared during the seventh century, when the old Celtic festival of Samhain marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter.

During this time, it was believed that the barrier between the living and the dead became dangerously thin. Samhain fed upon this fear and superstition, growing stronger each year as people believed in him.

Eventually, ancient mystics managed to imprison him inside a stone and later within a specially constructed clock. For centuries he remained trapped, hidden away and forgotten.

Appearance

Samhain is instantly recognisable by his tall, thin body, dark cloak and large jack-o'-lantern-like head. His glowing eyes and twisted grin make him one of the most frightening apparitions ever recorded.

Unlike most ghosts, Samhain does not appear translucent or unstable. He manifests as a powerful, almost solid figure, surrounded by swirling darkness, black lightning and supernatural energy.

Powers and Abilities

Samhain is believed to be at least a Class VII Metaspectre, placing him in the same broad threat category as entities such as Gozer.

His known abilities include:

Unlike many ghosts, Samhain does not merely haunt a location. He attempts to reshape reality itself, creating a world in which ghosts rule and humans are powerless.

The First Encounter

Samhain first confronted the Ghostbusters during the events later documented as When Halloween Was Forever.

After an ancient clock containing Samhain was transported from Ireland to New York, his goblin servants succeeded in releasing him on Halloween night. Once free, Samhain unleashed large numbers of ghosts across the city and used his powers to prevent the night from ending.

His goal was simple - to make Halloween last forever.

As midnight passed, sunrise failed to come. New York became trapped in endless darkness while paranormal activity increased across the city.

The Ghostbusters eventually discovered that Samhain had a weakness to bright light. By using powerful illumination and proton streams together, they were able to weaken him long enough to trap him once again.

Return of the Ghost of Halloween

Samhain later escaped a second time during the incident known as Halloween II 1/2.

Seeking revenge on the Ghostbusters, he transformed the firehouse headquarters into a haunted fortress and once again attempted to spread eternal Halloween across the world.

This time the Ghostbusters discovered that Samhain's new fortress was being sustained by a mystical object known as a Time Stone. By destroying the stone, they caused Samhain's power to collapse and forced him back into containment.

Relationship with Other Ghosts

Many ghosts appear to fear Samhain rather than simply obey him. Reports suggest he can command entire legions of spirits, either through supernatural influence or because weaker entities are terrified of him.

Interestingly, Slimer showed signs of resisting Samhain's control. Although drawn toward him, Slimer never fully obeyed him, suggesting that Samhain's power is not absolute.

Weaknesses

Despite his enormous power, Samhain has several weaknesses.

Without Halloween energy to feed upon, Samhain becomes significantly less dangerous.

Where Is Samhain Now?

No confirmed sighting of Samhain has been recorded for many years. Officially, he remains contained.

However, paranormal researchers have noticed unusual increases in ghost activity around Halloween in certain parts of the world. In particular, old clocks, abandoned churches, ruined Celtic sites and antique collections connected to Ireland have all shown unusual P.K.E. readings.

Some Ghostbusters believe Samhain is still trying to influence the world from within containment, waiting for another opportunity to escape.

Others believe fragments of his power still remain active every Halloween, especially wherever people embrace fear, darkness and superstition.

Current Status

Samhain remains one of the few ghosts the Ghostbusters never truly defeated - only delayed.

Every Halloween, as the nights grow darker and the veil between worlds grows thinner, there are still those who wonder whether the Ghost of Halloween is waiting to return.
