In today’s feature, we’re taking a look at something that some Ghostbusters fans may not realize exists: the vinyl release of the 1990 video game soundtrack for the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive.

Now, let’s be clear, released in 2019 by Subcon Records, this was not an official or licensed product. Instead, it arrived as an unofficial pressing but quickly gained attention among retro gaming fans and soundtrack collectors alike, selling out and inevitably becoming a bit of a white whale for some.

Spread across 17 tracks, the album brings together all of the game’s memorable music composed by Kazuhiko Nagai. That includes the 16-bit take on Ray Parker Jr.’s iconic theme, along with instantly recognizable tunes for anyone who grew up playing the game. From the overworld theme to the music heard while browsing the in-game store, through level backing tracks, and closing out with the upbeat end credit theme, it is all here.

As of now, Subcon is no longer producing the record. However, copies do still surface on secondary markets such as eBay. A word of caution, though. Prices can vary wildly, with some listings reaching into the hundreds. That said, deals are still out there if you keep an eye open. I recently managed to snag my own copy for under $100, all in, including Canadian conversion and shipping. In closing, we’re left with one lingering question: How has Tahiti’s The Real Ghostbusters soundtrack still not received a vinyl release, official or otherwise?
