Fans have been waiting patiently for an update on Netflix’s upcoming animated Ghostbusters series, and while today doesn’t bring any concrete release news, it does offer a clearer sense of what not to expect.

Earlier this morning, Netflix unveiled its official 2026 slate, outlining the films and series set to debut over the coming year. Among the extensive lineup, the Ghostbusters animated series, currently in production alongside Sony Pictures Animation, was notably absent, meaning fans should not expect the series to arrive this year.

One animated title that did appear on the slate was Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. While comparisons were inevitable, especially after executive producer and showrunner Eric Robles previously noted that the series would draw some inspiration from The Real Ghostbusters, its inclusion isn’t surprising. Audiences were given a first look at Tales From ’85 last year, complete with a projected “sometime in 2026” release window, whereas the Ghostbusters series has so far only been previewed behind closed doors. Adding to the overlap, Flying Bark Productions, known for its work on Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Glitch Techs, and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, is involved in production on both series.

The most recent update on the Ghostbusters series came in June during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where Netflix confirmed the project as part of its “Family Spectacle” slate. During the presentation, Director of Animation for Families and Kids Dominique Bazay emphasized the series’ scale and ambition, positioning it alongside properties such as Minecraft and Clash of Clans, both of which were also absent from the 2026 lineup.
